An illustration of a galaxy in shades of blue.

Autumn Roses by Dorothea Paas

Dorothea Paas is one of the finest songwriters from the musical hotbed that is Canada. That's right. There is so much good stuff going on up there right now. I am only mildly keyed in on the Toronto and Montreal scenes, but there must be plenty of other good stuff out there in that vast country. But I've got my hands full as it is.

I'm very excited for the new record to come out, as this first single is just wonderful. I absolutely loved the duet that her and Marker Starling made, "Go On", and this is slightly reminiscent of that record, in that we have more Wurlitzer piano and gorgeous vocals. But it's also a more 'thick' piece of music than that was- Dorothea is no stranger to complexities and layering (why yes, I  did catch her Instagram video where she layered the vocal harmonies of "Kites Are Fun" by The Free Design). Her previous album showed plenty of that, but I'm really looking forward to this upcoming record. The personnel is moderno classico, with Eliza Niemi and Chris Cummings amongst others.

Bandcamp also says this album had a caterer. Bless Canada. The full album comes out November 15, 2024 on Telephone Explosion, so be on the lookout!
